That was the answer the explorer James Cook got when he asked the native people what kind of animal that was. Well, that went a bit wrong! The marsupials have a kind of rubber band in their hind legs, so that they can make high jumps. The faster a kangaroo hops, the faster the animal is catapulted forward and the less energy it uses. Although a kangaroo can reach an impressive speed of 64 km/h, there is one thing it cannot do: walk backwards.
