The word 'kangaroo' comes from the language of the Aboriginals, the original inhabitants of Australia. It means something like 'I don't understand'. That was the answer the explorer James Cook got when he asked the native people what kind of animal that was. Well, that went a bit wrong! The marsupials have a kind of rubber band in their hind legs, so that they can make high jumps. The faster a kangaroo hops, the faster the animal is catapulted forward and the less energy it uses. Although a kangaroo can reach an impressive speed of 64 km/h, there is one thing it cannot do: walk backwards.
