Clydesdales are strong, large horses. Typical characteristics include a slightly curved nose, long ears, and a short neck. They have a friendly disposition and are hardworking and versatile.
Shoeing a Clydesdale can be a very tiring task for a farrier. Not only are the horseshoes extremely large, they can weigh over 2.5 kg. This means they have four or five times more iron content than those of warmbloods or thoroughbreds. Although Clydesdales are rather bulky and, above all, very heavy, their movements are very graceful. They are famous for being able to lift their white legs with great force and very high. Therefore, they are not only used as draft animals, but are also seen in shows and parades.
