Clydesdales are large, cold-blooded horses with strong, long, hairy legs. The hair on their legs is long and thick. They are intelligent, courageous, and, despite their large size, extraordinarily gentle.

Many Clydesdales can be recognized by their white legs. These legs are also known as "boots." The horses often have brown coats, but black, bay (reddish-brown), and red ones are also available. Clydesdales are often used as draft horses. They can pull tree trunks, for example, over terrain that would be difficult to access with a tractor. They are easy to train and enjoy learning. They are very good horseback riders. However, because they are so large, they require particularly large saddles.
